Estimated prevalence of an underestimated problem

The true prevalence of Peyronie’s disease is not clear, but is estimated to be approximately 5 % of adult men.5 Among populations without specific comorbidities, the prevalence has ranged from 0.39% in a retrospective study of medical records in Rochester, Minnesota up to 8.9% among men aged more than 40 years presenting for prostate screening.6-11 The prevalence of PD has also been recorded in several studies among subpopulations of men with specific comorbidities. Specifically, the prevalence was 7.9% for men with erectile dysfunction (ED) and 20.3% for men with ED and diabetes12,13

Patient reluctance to seek diagnosis and treatment from a physician and unawareness of the disease may affect perception of prevalence.5,14,15
